This 16-week course will take you through today’s best print, online, and media resources available in economic education. Print resources include the EBox3 Teacher and Student Guides and three core texts written by some of today’s leading economists and philosophers which serve as the spine of the entire course. In conjunction with this, The Common Sense Reader CD-ROM includes articles written by both classic and contemporary economists and even a few recognizable politicians. We believe that media can enhance a student's learning experience. For this reason, we include DVDs and online video clips that stimulate vigorous discussion and encourage students to observe and discover the principles of economics in everyday life. From China to the slums of D.C., from John Stossel’s humor and cynicism, to Reverend Sirico’s passionate praise of entrepreneurship as a spiritual vocation, these video clips will take you on an unforgettable journey that not only entertains and informs, but inspires.

Print Resources:

The Economics In a Box curriculum is built around two major texts that are used throughout the course: Common Sense Economics Revised and Updated and Money, Greed, and God. Additionally, Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?, while only used during the first three weeks of the course, serves to support the curriculum by introducing the basic principles of economics in a fun, interesting, and easy-to-understand manner.

Three core texts:

  • Common Sense Economics—Revised and Updated by Gwartney, Stroup, Lee and Ferrarini
  • Money, Greed, and God by Jay Richards
  • Whatever Happened to Penny Candy by Richard Maybury

While not a core text, The Law by Frederic Bastiat is a strongly recommended read. This book will serve as the basis for an optional essay. It is a fascinating read, and its principles, while being timeless, are especially timely today.
